How to Orchestrate a Healthy Pizza Night for Your Family
Military spouse pizza lovers rejoice! It is possible to make pizza night healthy for your family. Kimberly Bacso sat down with Heather Campbell to find out how. You can read our Q&A below, and/or watch their Facebook Live here.
You are a registered dietitian who loves pizza night. Please introduce yourself and your food philosophy.
As a mom of three children in less than four years, realistic, healthy meals on a budget became the epicenter of our family’s wellness. Living in Interior Alaska with babies was not for the faint of heart, and healthy, affordable food required intentional planning. As a pediatric and family nutrition expert, we’ve found a routine that balances our favorite fun foods with the needed growing foods.
Is there a place for pizza nights in a healthy military spouse lifestyle?
Absolutely. An important part of any healthy lifestyle is finding a routine that allows for your favorite foods, including pizza. I firmly believe that some foods feed your body, and some foods feed your soul. We definitely need both for a balanced and happy life.
How do you do pizza night?
Our favorite way to have pizza night is to order pizza to the house, and eat in the living room while watching a movie. We normally eat our meals at the table, so eating in the living room adds to the special treat of pizza night. By adding a side of vegetables to the meal, we are able to create a more balanced plate and enjoy without guilt.
What tips do you have for choosing your pizza?
Try to add a vegetable or fruit to your topping if you can. We fully embrace the fun food mentality of pizza, but we balance our meal with growing foods like cooked or raw vegetables, or fresh fruit on the side. We have a two-slice limit, which also helps us save pizza for our favorite thing: cold leftover pizza.
What is your favorite homemade pizza recipe?
We love build-your-own pizza lunchables. We use naan bread dippers, pizza sauce, shredded cheese, and toppings of choice. We have made these at home, for school lunch, for road trips, all the time. They’re consistently a hit with the kids.
